Education Program for Schools

Curriculum

We have staff available to present these four curriculum modules. Please call Denise Wolgamott at 608-1023 for more information and scheduling. Ashland and Talent schools can call Recology Ashland Sanitary Service at 482-1471.

Note: Classes can be tailored to one grade level up or down for more flexibility.

Grades K-2: Where Do Our Wrappers Go?

A discussion about what happens to our trash after it goes into the garbage can. Includes a picture summary of the trash's journey from garbage can, through on-route pick-up, transfer station and landfill. Reduce, reuse, recycle is examined as an alternative to landfill disposal. Props include samples of recyclable/non-recyclable packaging, compost material, hands-on cross section of a landfill, and an example of a zero-waste lunch pail. Simple handouts for after school fun will be left with the teacher and a recommended pre-visit video is available.

Grades 3-5: Reduce, Reuse...Then Recycle!

A look at ways to reduce our waste and reuse what we purchase. Hands-on displays include recycled-content packaging, options for purchase between a variety of packages, zero-waste lunches, and examples of crafts, jewelry, and art made from reused materials. This is a hands-on presentation with lots of props and interactive discussion. A recommended pre-class video is available.

Grades 6-8: Trash Facts Jeopardy

A fun way to learn about solid waste facts. Categories include history of garbage disposal back as far as Ancient Greece; recycling trivia; waste reduction and reuse methodology; local solid waste industry facts; statistics on worldwide trash disposal; famous people in garbage and recycling; and imaginative future solutions for our solid waste disposal dilemmas. Comments on answers and questions can generate a lively discussion of all issues involved in the solid waste industry.

Grades 9-12: Slide Show and Discussion

In-depth look at the Rogue Valley's local solid waste industry with discussion on alternative methodologies' pros and cons. Social implications of continued waste generation versus waste prevention/reuse alternatives will be discussed.

Field Trips: Field trips to the Transfer Station and Recycling Center in Ashland, to the Materials Recovery Facility in White City, and to the Dry Creek Landfill are highly recommended and available upon request.
